On Monday, October 14, 2019, Arthur J. Sonnick III, loving husband and father, passed away at the age of 64.
Arthur was born on May 26, 1955 in Brooklyn, NY to Arthur and Anne Sonnick. Arthur grew up in Maspeth, Queens. He graduated from Power Memorial Academy in 1973. Upon graduation Arthur worked in the textile industry. From there, Arthur pursued his passion of becoming a funeral director, graduating from Farmingdale State University with a degree in Mortuary Science. He worked at Hempstead Funeral Home for over 30 years.
Arthur married his wife Kristine in August of 1978. From there, they moved to Bellerose, where they raised their son AJ (Arthur J. Sonnick IV), born in 1993.
Arthur loved his family and friends. Aside from doing what he loved, being a funeral director, he spent as much time with his family as possible. Arthur was very dedicated to his parish of St. Gregory the Great and those in the Bellerose community. Arthur served his church as a lector, attending every 8:00am Mass on Sunday’s. He was Vice President of the School Board and a member of the newly formed Academy board.
Another passion of Arthur’s was cooking. There wasn’t a moment when he wasn’t cooking, whether it be for his family or community. He enjoyed cooking for the Annual Church Festival, St. Patrick’s Dance (which he co-chaired), or Parish Bingo (just to name a few). He was involved with the St. Anne’s Knights of Columbus Council as well, cooking at their various functions. Arthur was always generous with his talents, truly selfless, and ensuring that everyone else was taken care of.
Arthur was also a member of The Ocean Club and loved his beach club. He served as a member of their Board of Governors upon his passing.
Arthur was preceded in death by his father Arthur Jr. He is survived by his mother, Anne, and his brothers Steve and Jim, his wife Kristine, his son AJ, and his daughter in law Elizabeth. He was a loving son, husband, father, brother, godfather, uncle, and cousin to his family.
Funeral services will be held for Arthur at Hess-Miller Funeral Home (Middle Village), Tuesday 10/15 and Wednesday 10/16, 2-5pm and 7-9pm. The funeral mass will be on Thursday, 10/17 at 11am at St. Gregory the Great Church (Bellerose), with the burial at St. Charles Cemetery to follow.
