Dear Parents,
As you are already aware St. Gregory the Great Catholic Academy will be closed until April 20, 2020 (Please see the press release from the Superintendent of the Diocese of Brooklyn). In response to politicians’ statements suggesting that schools potentially may not be reopening this year, we are taking a proactive step to send home all student textbooks and personal items. The school building will be staffed Tuesday evening, March 17, and Wednesday evening, March 18, from 7:00PM – 8:30 PM. We will set a schedule based on letters of the alphabet for families to come and go to their students’ classrooms and collect their personal items and textbooks. We ask that you do not bring your child, and that only one family member come, if possible. Parents will be asked to line up outside, and go into the building in small groups, and in as quick a manner as possible, get what you need, and leave. All the safety protocols recommended by authorities will be followed, ie: maintaining social distancing etc. We need to stress that this is not a time for parents to socialize with each other, nor is it a time to be trying to conference with teachers. Faculty members have volunteered to be present, to oversee the procedures and make sure protocols are followed. Please see the schedule below for your time slot. Please understand that no exceptions will be made to come to school at any point after Wednesday evening. Therefore, plan accordingly, and take everything from your child’s desk. Bring bags and/or boxes with you to pack up their belongings. In grades 4-8, you need to know your child’s textbook number. You will be asked to sign a release that you are receiving all of your child’s textbooks, and that they must be returned in good condition, or you will be asked to pay for the replacement of damaged or lost books.
Again, we recognize that this is not an ideal situation. But, in the face of a potentially indefinite school closure for the 2019-2020 school year, we want to utilize all the resources at our disposal and help you have peace of mind that your child can continue their learning. There will be a lot of new information coming out over the next days and weeks. Rest assured, you will be periodically updated by the teachers and myself as information needs to be shared. Stay in touch with your child’s homeroom teacher as much as possible, and we will do the same. Thank you for your cooperation in all these matters. We have proven to be a resilient community in the past and I am confident that Saint Gregory the Great will come through this with flying colors!
Sincerely,
Lynn M. Alaimo, Principal
